At Distinction Gifts, we are devoted to producing the highest quality writing instruments for the most discriminating of tastes. Whether for personal use, an award for achievement, as a corporate gift for loyal customers, or to staff for acknowledgement of long service or a job well done, a Pen of Distinction will never fail to impress. Each pen we make is not only a beautifully crafted writing tool but a work of art.
Handcrafted using New Zealand's beautiful native timbers, these pens are not mass produced but made with care, craftsmanship and attention to detail. The New Zealand native timbers that we mostly use are native NZ Kauri, Rimu, Puriri, Pohutukawa, and Rewarewa. Our Signature Series is made using New Zealand Swamp Kauri which is known as the world’s oldest workable wood. All swamp kauri we use for pens goes through a stabilization process to strengthen and harden the timber for extra durability and a superior finish.
All pen barrels are individually turned, finished and assembled with quality pen mechanisms by Distinction Gifts on the Kauri Coast of Northland, New Zealand. Each pen starts out by carefully selecting a piece of wood which has been pre-cut to size, a hole is drilled down the centre of the piece and then a brass tube is glued in. This is then put on a mandrel on the lathe and cut to shape, sanded and polished. Each barrel undergoes a finishing process where it is polished through nine grades of micro-mesh then coated with a special purpose high quality shellac wax to achieve a gorgeous and extremely smooth finish. This process produces a pen in which the beauty of the natural wood shines through and yet is durable enough to last a lifetime. The final stage is to assemble it together with a quality pen kit, insert the refill and it's ready to write. Each pen is given a serial number and comes with a 2-year warranty against faulty workmanship. Refill replacements for all our pens can be purchased from most stationery stores.
A beautifully finished wooden pen brings about a sense of appreciation for your writing tool, unlike that of a metal or plastic one. The natural beauty of wood with its own grain features and unique characteristics will bring enjoyment and satisfaction to those who value quality, handcrafted, writing instruments. Every finished piece becomes a collectable investment giving you the privileged opportunity to enjoy the distinctive and unique beauty of New Zealand’s native timbers.
